CLIENTS

“Clients Relevant to the Valuation of Fine Arts and Cultural Collections that have been Valued in their Entirety”

Simon Storey Valuers, under the direction of Simon Storey as Senior Valuer, has conducted within the last eighteen months valuations for Australian Accounting Standard AAS 4 for the majority of major heritage collection institutions in Australia.

Galleries

Art Gallery of NSW
The Art Gallery of NSW commissioned a valuation of their entire collection this year. Unlike the sampling approach undertaken by other institutions, the Art Gallery of NSW had every asset individually valued. The project was completed within the time frame.

The National Gallery of Australia
Valuation entailing the individual valuation of all items on permanent display and items worth over $1,000,000. A computer-generated sample of 10% was also valued. In total, over 10,000 items were individually appraised.

Bathurst Regional Gallery
The Bathurst Regional Gallery collection is comparable to the UWS Collection. The same valuation methodology will be employed.

The National Gallery of Victoria
The National Gallery of Victoria valuation was the largest cultural institution valuation undertaken in Australia. The many thousands of internationally important works were valued ahead of time and well within the National Gallery of Victoria's valuation budget.

Museums

Australian Museum
The valuation of the Australia Museum entailed the individual valuation of over one hundred and sixty icons and items physically sorted for sampling by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In all the Australian Museum's collection comprises between five and seven million items.

National Museum of Australia
The National Museum of Australia has a collection similar but of a smaller size than the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. The valuation was conducted valuing icons from their existing Catastrophe Priority Lists A & B. The remaining items were valued on a random sample basis with individual values assigned to each and then extrapolated to give a total estimate of the collection. The National Museum of Australia, like the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, is very rich in areas such as Australian art, natural and social history, people and the environment and indigenous Australia.

Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney
The MCA required a similar valuation to the Department's requirements. While being a smaller collection the process of valuation will be the same.

The Powerhouse Museum Sydney
The museum holds many thousands of social interest objects and has been valued by us for accounting standards on three occasions.

Sydney University Macleay Museum
A large and important collection of ethnographic and natural history items valued in its entirety.

Libraries

State Library of New South Wales
The State Library of New South Wales was valued for Accounting Standards using a priority list of icons ranging from relics such as Captain Cook's compass to the vastly important social commentary of Arthur Dennis Allen's family photograph albums of the 1900s to 1940s. This valuation involved many thousands of items selected at random, producing a successful sampling formula.

State Parliamentary Library and Archives
Valued the collection of the State Parliamentary Library and Archives icons included some of the most historic documents in the nation. As with other institutions, a sample valuation was undertaken on the remainder of the collections, producing an overall amount for the financial statements.

Other

The Australian War Memorial
A valuation of the collection of The Australian War Memorial, including the individual values for icons from their Priority Lists 1 and 2, and a sampling of 10% generated by their computer management system. The valuation was finished ahead of schedule despite their computer breakdowns.

State Records New South Wales (Archives)
This valuation was of approximately one hundred icons and fifty sampled groups of immeasurable social significance including sporting related holdings.

Royal Botanic Gardens
The Royal Botanic Gardens' icon collection included rare manuscript books and some of the rarest plant specimens known. The bulk of the herbarium valuation was determined on a recollection basis and approved by the Accounting Guidelines. Areas of specific significance valued include the type specimens of the banksia, as collected by Sir Joseph Banks, and the prehistoric wollemi pine.

National Archives of Australia
The archives consisted of some 450 kilometres of files. Over 50% of this valuation was undertaken using the archives highly developed database on the Internet.
